وَإِذْ قَالَتْ أُمَّةٌ مِّنْهُمْ لِمَ تَعِظُونَ قَوْمًاۙ ٱللَّهُ مُهْلِكُهُمْ أَوْ مُعَذِّبُهُمْ عَذَابًا شَدِيدًاۖ قَالُواْ مَعْذِرَةً إِلَىٰ رَبِّكُمْ وَلَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَّقُونَ 164
فَلَمَّا نَسُواْ مَا ذُكِّرُواْ بِهِۦٓ أَنجَيْنَا ٱلَّذِينَ يَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ ٱلسُّوٓءِ وَأَخَذْنَا ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُواْ بِعَذَابِۭ بَــِٔيسِۭ بِمَا كَانُواْ يَفْسُقُونَ 165
فَلَمَّا عَتَوْاْ عَن مَّا نُهُواْ عَنْهُ قُلْنَا لَهُمْ كُونُواْ قِرَدَةً خَـٰسِــِٔينَ 166
وَإِذْ تَأَذَّنَ رَبُّكَ لَيَبْعَثَنَّ عَلَيْهِمْ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ مَن يَسُومُهُمْ سُوٓءَ ٱلْعَذَابِۗ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَسَرِيعُ ٱلْعِقَابِۖ وَإِنَّهُۥ لَغَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ 167
وَقَطَّعْنَـٰهُمْ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ أُمَمًاۖ مِّنْهُمُ ٱلصَّـٰلِحُونَ وَمِنْهُمْ دُونَ ذَٲلِكَۖ وَبَلَوْنَـٰهُم بِٱلْحَسَنَـٰتِ وَٱلسَّيِّـَٔـاتِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْجِعُونَ 168
فَخَلَفَ مِنۢ بَعْدِهِمْ خَلْفٌ وَرِثُواْ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ يَأْخُذُونَ عَرَضَ هَـٰذَا ٱلْأَدْنَىٰ وَيَقُولُونَ سَيُغْفَرُ لَنَا وَإِن يَأْتِهِمْ عَرَضٌ مِّثْلُهُۥ يَأْخُذُوهُۚ أَلَمْ يُؤْخَذْ عَلَيْهِم مِّيثَـٰقُ ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ أَن لَّا يَقُولُواْ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ إِلَّا ٱلْحَقَّ وَدَرَسُواْ مَا فِيهِۗ وَٱلدَّارُ ٱلْأَخِرَةُ خَيْرٌ لِّلَّذِينَ يَتَّقُونَۗ أَفَلَا تَعْقِلُونَ 169
وَٱلَّذِينَ يُمَسِّكُونَ بِٱلْكِتَـٰبِ وَأَقَامُواْ ٱلصَّلَوٲةَ إِنَّا لَا نُضِيعُ أَجْرَ ٱلْمُصْلِحِينَ 170
وَإِذْwa-idhAnd whenقَالَتْqālatsaidأُمَّةٌۭummatuna communityمِّنْهُمْmin'humamong themلِمَlimaWhyتَعِظُونَtaʿiẓūna(do) you preachقَوْمًا ۙqawmana peopleٱللَّهُl-lahu(whom) Allahمُهْلِكُهُمْmuh'likuhum(is going to) destroy themأَوْaworمُعَذِّبُهُمْmuʿadhibuhumpunish themعَذَابًۭاʿadhāban(with) a punishmentشَدِيدًۭا ۖshadīdansevereقَالُوا۟qālūThey saidمَعْذِرَةًmaʿdhiratanTo be absolvedإِلَىٰilābeforeرَبِّكُمْrabbikumyour Lordوَلَعَلَّهُمْwalaʿallahumand that they mayيَتَّقُونَyattaqūnabecome righteous
7:164
فَلَمَّاfalammāSo whenنَسُوا۟nasūthey forgotمَاmāwhatذُكِّرُوا۟dhukkirūthey had been remindedبِهِۦٓbihiwith [it]أَنجَيْنَاanjaynāWe savedٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoيَنْهَوْنَyanhawnaforbadeعَنِʿani[from]ٱلسُّوٓءِl-sūithe evilوَأَخَذْنَاwa-akhadhnāand We seizedٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoظَلَمُوا۟ẓalamūwrongedبِعَذَابٍۭbiʿadhābinwith a punishmentبَـِٔيسٍۭbaīsinwretchedبِمَاbimābecauseكَانُوا۟kānūthey wereيَفْسُقُونَyafsuqūnadefiantly disobeying
7:165
فَلَمَّاfalammāSo whenعَتَوْا۟ʿatawthey exceeded all boundsعَنʿanaboutمَّاmāwhatنُهُوا۟nuhūthey were forbiddenعَنْهُʿanhufrom itقُلْنَاqul'nāWe saidلَهُمْlahumto themكُونُوا۟kūnūBeقِرَدَةًqiradatanapesخَـٰسِـِٔينَkhāsiīnadespised
7:166
وَإِذْwa-idhAnd whenتَأَذَّنَta-adhanadeclaredرَبُّكَrabbukayour Lordلَيَبْعَثَنَّlayabʿathannathat He would surely sendعَلَيْهِمْʿalayhimupon themإِلَىٰilātillيَوْمِyawmi(the) Dayٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِl-qiyāmati(of) the Resurrectionمَنman(those) whoيَسُومُهُمْyasūmuhumwould afflict themسُوٓءَsūa(with) a grievousٱلْعَذَابِ ۗl-ʿadhābi[the] punishmentإِنَّinnaIndeedرَبَّكَrabbakayour Lordلَسَرِيعُlasarīʿu(is) surely swiftٱلْعِقَابِ ۖl-ʿiqābi(in) the retributionوَإِنَّهُۥwa-innahubut indeed, Heلَغَفُورٌۭlaghafūrun(is) surely Oft-ForgivingرَّحِيمٌۭraḥīmunMost Merciful
7:167
وَقَطَّعْنَـٰهُمْwaqaṭṭaʿnāhumAnd We divided themفِىfīinٱلْأَرْضِl-arḍithe earthأُمَمًۭا ۖumaman(as) nationsمِّنْهُمُmin'humuAmong themٱلصَّـٰلِحُونَl-ṣāliḥūna(are) the righteousوَمِنْهُمْwamin'humand among themدُونَdūna(are) other thanذَٰلِكَ ۖdhālikathatوَبَلَوْنَـٰهُمwabalawnāhumAnd We tested themبِٱلْحَسَنَـٰتِbil-ḥasanātiwith the goodوَٱلسَّيِّـَٔاتِwal-sayiātiand the badلَعَلَّهُمْlaʿallahumso that they mayيَرْجِعُونَyarjiʿūnareturn
7:168
فَخَلَفَfakhalafaThen succeededمِنۢminfromبَعْدِهِمْbaʿdihimafter themخَلْفٌۭkhalfunsuccessorsوَرِثُوا۟warithū(who) inheritedٱلْكِتَـٰبَl-kitābathe Bookيَأْخُذُونَyakhudhūnatakingعَرَضَʿaraḍagoodsهَـٰذَاhādhā(of) thisٱلْأَدْنَىٰl-adnāthe lower (life)وَيَقُولُونَwayaqūlūnaand they sayسَيُغْفَرُsayugh'faruIt will be forgivenلَنَاlanāfor usوَإِنwa-inAnd ifيَأْتِهِمْyatihimcomes to themعَرَضٌۭʿaraḍungoodsمِّثْلُهُۥmith'luhusimilar to itيَأْخُذُوهُ ۚyakhudhūhuthey will take itأَلَمْalamWas notيُؤْخَذْyu'khadhtakenعَلَيْهِمʿalayhimon themمِّيثَـٰقُmīthāquCovenantٱلْكِتَـٰبِl-kitābi(of) the Bookأَنanthatلَّاlānotيَقُولُوا۟yaqūlūthey will sayعَلَىʿalāaboutٱللَّهِl-lahiAllahإِلَّاillāexceptٱلْحَقَّl-ḥaqathe truthوَدَرَسُوا۟wadarasūwhile they studiedمَاmāwhatفِيهِ ۗfīhi(is) in itوَٱلدَّارُwal-dāruAnd the homeٱلْـَٔاخِرَةُl-ākhiratu(of) the Hereafterخَيْرٌۭkhayrun(is) betterلِّلَّذِينَlilladhīnafor those whoيَتَّقُونَ ۗyattaqūnafear AllahأَفَلَاafalāSo will notتَعْقِلُونَtaʿqilūnayou use intellect
7:169
وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaAnd those whoيُمَسِّكُونَyumassikūnahold fastبِٱلْكِتَـٰبِbil-kitābito the Bookوَأَقَامُوا۟wa-aqāmūand establishٱلصَّلَوٰةَl-ṣalatathe prayerإِنَّاinnāindeed, Weلَاlā(will) notنُضِيعُnuḍīʿu[We] let go wasteأَجْرَajra(the) rewardٱلْمُصْلِحِينَl-muṣ'liḥīna(of) the reformers
7:170
