Raised in a family of Qur’an memorizers, he completed memorization by age eight under the guidance of his uncle and further refined his recitation with Sheikh Tawfiq Abdul Aziz at Al-Azhar institutions.
His powerful and expressive voice, influenced by Mustafa Ismail’s style, earned him national recognition in the 1950s when Mustafa Ismail himself praised his talent. In 1976, Hamdi Al-Zamil passed Egypt Radio’s rigorous recitation audition and became a regular voice on national radio and television, delivering live Qur’an recitation and leading special programs until his death.
